Four cycles: inquiry, method, reflection and sharing. This cycle can be employed to explore any topic or subject.
Uprise meets from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Our Center is open August through May each year.
By spending team outside of the center, learners gain real-world experience.
Learners spend one day a month donating time to their community.
Uprise serves people aged 11 through 18. Exceptions to the age range can be made dependent on a learner's needs and circumstances.
We are located in the historic neighborhood of Springfield in Jacksonville, Florida. Our building is conveniently located near Klutho Park and Main Street.
Uprise allows learners the opportunity to explore what matters most to them, fostering a lifelong love of learning and a method to discover themselves and their art in life.
We start each day together as a large group. All agenda items, offerings, meetings and presentations take place in this setting. Once we break for lunch, learners exclusively determine their own schedules. One day per week is experiential and one day per week is unscheduled.
The role of adults at Uprise is to act as mentors and a support system for learners. Learners select a facilitator to be an accountability partner, a sounding board and a guide for the learning path they create.
Learning happens all around us and the Uprise community strives to incorporate the larger community and environment into our center. Following the establishment of a safety and accountability plan, learners are permitted to explore outside of our physical location.
Uprise Center offers sliding fee scale, which enables all families to educate their children as equal members of an economically, racially, and culturally diverse community. Our community is primarily supported through the fee paid by its families.
We ask learners to respect one another and themselves. As long as clothing does not display offensive or hurtful content and a learner's bottom, midriff and chest are covered; learners are free to express themselves with their clothing, hair, make-up and accessories as they see fit. Creativity welcome here!
We love for learners to attend during the days and times that Uprise is open for its community, but we recognize that valuable and important things happen outside of the center as well. While we ask for a commitment to participate regularly in our community, there are no penalties for absence. Our schedule is also designed to allow learners to attend less than five days per week, based on their unique needs.
We want learners to "Rise Up" to meet the changing world. We want to revolutionize, evolve and innovate the existing way of thinking. We want to "Rise Up" to help one another. We want to stand up, show up and lift up each other. Uprise is an aspirational reflection of what we hope to achieve and how we want to impact our communities, large and small. Uprise.
Uprise is a non-profit community learning center. We do not meet the criteria of a school in so far as we do not assign grades, do not mandate attendance and do not participate in compulsory testing. Learners choosing to participate in Uprise register with an umbrella school or as a home school student in order to satisfy the state's legal requirement for compulsory attendance. We are available to assist families with either of these options.
Uprise takes the public health crisis very seriously. We are unable to predict the status of the pandemic in August when meetings begin, however, we are committed to having a safety plan with robust protocols in place prior to opening. Once this plan has been crafted in consideration of CDC recommendations and best practices, the plan will be available via this website. Rest assured that learner and community safety are critically important to us.
